The Best Parties on Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is considered Thailand’s ultimate party paradise and attracts millions of party travellers to the island every year. Without a doubt, the world-famous Full Moon Party is one of the largest and most legendary beach parties in all of Southeast Asia.
However, Koh Phangan offers far more than just the Full Moon Party. The island is also home to many other amazing parties, beach bars, and nightlife locations that are definitely worth visiting.
At the same time, Koh Phangan is not only a destination for party lovers. The island also features beautiful tropical beaches, crystal-clear water, and many peaceful places perfect for relaxation and laid-back holidays.
This article focuses specifically on the best parties and bars on Koh Phangan.

What to Expect in This Koh Phangan Party Guide:
The World-Famous Full Moon Party Koh Phangan
Without a doubt, this is THE party on Koh Phangan! As the name already suggests, the legendary Full Moon Party takes place every month during the full moon at Haad Rin Nok Beach on Koh Phangan.
Depending on the season, up to 30,000 partygoers gather on the island to celebrate until sunrise while dancing to booming electronic beats directly on the beach. The music focus is mainly electronic, although you will also hear plenty of pop, hip-hop, and commercial party music throughout the night.
It is not uncommon for internationally known DJs to travel to Koh Phangan to perform during the event.
What makes the Full Moon Party especially unique is the atmosphere itself. The entire beach transforms into one giant open-air party zone — all of this taking place on one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Phangan.
Partying directly by the ocean, feeling the sand beneath your feet, enjoying a delicious drink, and listening to the music under the tropical night sky — honestly, what more could you ask for?
Warm-Up Parties & Afterparties
Already during the afternoon, numerous warm-up parties begin around Haad Rin village. Bars and beach clubs prepare visitors for the long party night ahead with electronic music, alcohol buckets, and lively atmospheres.
And for hardcore party lovers who still have energy left after sunrise, various afterparties continue well into the next day.
The Negative Side of the Full Moon Party
Of course, the Full Moon Party generates significant income for the local population and businesses on Koh Phangan. However, there are also negative aspects and criticism surrounding the event.
Besides the enormous noise levels, the party also attracts questionable individuals from time to time. Reports about drug consumption, drug dealing, and heavily intoxicated tourists are unfortunately not uncommon.
As with many major parties around the world, alcohol and certain substances can occasionally increase aggressive behaviour in some people.
That being said, during my own visit to the Full Moon Party, the atmosphere remained peaceful overall. Most people simply wanted to celebrate, dance, and enjoy the night together in a relaxed mood.
Useful Facts About the Full Moon Party Koh Phangan
Conclusion About the Full Moon Party
It is truly impressive to see how the entire Haad Rin village and beach transform into one gigantic party zone during the Full Moon Party. Equally fascinating is the enormous number of visitors gathering in this relatively small area simply to celebrate together until sunrise.
What I personally found especially cool is the fact that the party takes place directly on the beach — definitely not your everyday party location.
If you enjoy electronic music, beach parties, and lively nightlife atmospheres, the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan will most likely leave a strong impression on you.
That being said, you will also encounter heavily intoxicated tourists who clearly lose control over their alcohol consumption and occasionally resemble walking beer barrels.
The Half Moon Party Koh Phangan – My Personal Favourite
On Koh Phangan, there is always a reason to celebrate. If it is not the Full Moon, then it is simply the Half Moon.
The Half Moon Party takes place one week before and one week after the Full Moon Party, meaning the event is held every two weeks.
Besides the Full Moon Party, the Half Moon Party is one of the largest and most famous events on Koh Phangan, although on a slightly smaller and more organised scale.
A Unique Party Location in the Middle of the Jungle
Just like the atmosphere itself, the location of the Half Moon Party is anything but ordinary. The event takes place deep inside a jungle area on Koh Phangan, surrounded by tropical plants, palm trees, colourful lights, and dense vegetation. Even a small waterfall is integrated into the party location, adding even more character to the already impressive scenery.
The entire venue feels like a tropical electronic music festival hidden somewhere in the jungle.
Electronic Music Focus – But Hip-Hop Is Also Represented
The musical focus of the Half Moon Party lies mainly on electronic music.
At the main stage, powerful trance beats dominate the atmosphere, while DJs on additional stages play techno and house music throughout the night. On the smaller stages, you will also find hip-hop and rap music, offering a bit more musical variety compared to some other parties on Koh Phangan.
One of the More Expensive Parties on the Island
Compared to other events and parties on Koh Phangan, the Half Moon Party is definitely among the more expensive ones. However, in my opinion, the unique location, better organisation, stage design, and overall atmosphere justify the higher price quite well.
Useful Facts About the Half Moon Party Koh Phangan
Conclusion About the Half Moon Party
Personally, I enjoyed the Half Moon Party even more than the Full Moon Party. The location itself feels much more unique and atmospheric. Even though thousands of visitors still attend the event, the overall size remains more manageable and less chaotic compared to the Full Moon Party.
My personal impression was that the crowd at the Half Moon Party felt slightly more relaxed and somewhat more upscale overall. For me, the Half Moon Party definitely ranks among my favourite nightlife experiences on Koh Phangan.
Waterfall Party Koh Phangan
Compared to the two major events, the Full Moon Party and the Half Moon Party, the Waterfall Party is considered one of the smaller party events on Koh Phangan.
Nevertheless, it still ranks among the island’s more popular nightlife events, simply on a much more manageable scale. On peak nights, up to around 2,000 visitors attend the party.
Jungle Atmosphere with a Small Waterfall
Similar to the Half Moon Party, the Waterfall Party takes place in a jungle-like environment surrounded by tropical vegetation and palm trees.
The location even features a small waterfall flowing into a creek, giving the venue its characteristic atmosphere and unique setting.
The main dancefloor is partially covered and surrounded by bars selling alcoholic drinks and the famous party buckets. In addition, several food and barbecue stands are available throughout the venue.
Electronic Music with International DJs
The musical style mainly focuses on techno, house, electro, and minimal music. International DJs, special guest performers, and talented electronic artists regularly perform at the event, creating a proper underground festival atmosphere.
Useful Facts About the Waterfall Party
Conclusion About the Waterfall Party
If you prefer parties in a smaller and more relaxed setting, the Waterfall Party is definitely worth considering. Compared to the larger events on Koh Phangan, the atmosphere here feels more laid-back, intimate, and manageable.
Personally, I thought the event was enjoyable and a good alternative to the island’s huge and crowded festivals.
That being said, the Waterfall Party was not an absolute highlight for me either. If you are already in a party mood, it is certainly fun to visit — but if you skip it, you probably will not miss anything truly extraordinary.
Pool Party at Coral Bungalows on Haad Rin
The Pool Party on Koh Phangan takes place at the Coral Bungalows Resort and is one of the few free-entry parties on the island.
As the name already suggests, the focus here is partying directly in and around the swimming pool — so definitely do not forget your swimwear or bikini. During the main travel season between November and February, the Pool Party attracts large numbers of partygoers looking for a lively and affordable night out.
Outside of the peak season, visitor numbers are noticeably lower, making the atmosphere much more relaxed and less crowded.
Beachfront Location & Free Pickup Taxis
The party location sits directly near the beach, although slightly outside the main centre of Haad Rin village.
To make transportation easier, free pickup taxis are usually provided from Haad Rin towards the party location. These taxis are normally clearly marked and easy to recognise. The atmosphere at the Pool Party is generally very relaxed, energetic, and social, with many travellers partying together until the early morning hours.
Cheaper Than Most Other Parties
Compared to many other festivals and parties on Koh Phangan, the Pool Party is considerably more affordable. Drink prices are lower, there is no entrance fee, and overall the event feels much more casual than the island’s larger electronic music festivals. Personally, I thought the Pool Party was quite fun, although not necessarily one of the absolute highlights on Koh Phangan.
If your accommodation is located near Haad Rin, it is definitely worth checking out for a spontaneous party night. However, if you are staying in another part of the island, I would probably not recommend travelling long distances just for this event.
Useful Facts About the Pool Party
Conclusion About the Pool Party
The Pool Party is a fun and budget-friendly nightlife option on Koh Phangan, especially for travellers staying around Haad Rin.
The atmosphere is relaxed and social, while the free entry makes it attractive for backpackers and younger travellers.
Even though the party may not reach the level of the Full Moon or Half Moon Party, it still offers an entertaining night out with a more casual and less overwhelming atmosphere.
Garden Eden – Koh Phangan’s Hidden Party Gem
The Garden Eden Party is something like a true insider tip on Koh Phangan. The location of Garden Eden is hidden away on a remote part of the island that can realistically only be reached by boat. Technically, there is also a road leading there, but the condition of the route is so poor that it is barely usable, especially with a scooter.
Boats to Garden Eden usually depart from Haad Rin Beach.
Unique Location Directly by the Ocean
The location itself is absolutely unique. The small beach bar sits directly by the sea and is surrounded by rocks, cliffs, and tropical nature. From the venue, you get a fantastic view across Haad Yuan Beach and the surrounding coastline.
Compared to the massive Full Moon or Half Moon Parties, the atmosphere at Garden Eden feels much more intimate, relaxed, and alternative.
Electronic Music & Sunrise Atmosphere
At Garden Eden, the music focus lies entirely on electronic sounds, mainly trance and electronica. The party usually starts every Saturday around 9 PM and continues well into the following day until around midday. If you stay throughout the entire night, you will be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over Koh Phangan’s eastern coastline — definitely one of the highlights of the experience.
Most visitors arrive after midnight, when the atmosphere becomes livelier and the dancefloor slowly fills up.

Bars Around Haad Rin Beach
The 420 Bar is located on a hilltop with fantastic panoramic views overlooking Mae Haad Beach and the small island of Koh Ma.
The bar is especially popular during the early evening hours, when visitors gather to enjoy the breathtaking sunsets while listening to relaxed chillout beats and sipping on cocktails or cold beers.
During sunset time, the bar can become very crowded, so arriving a bit earlier is definitely recommended if you want to secure a good seat with a view. Besides drinks, the 420 Bar also serves snacks and meals at reasonable prices.
Relaxed Atmosphere with Chillout Music
The music at 420 Bar mainly consists of relaxed reggae, chillout, and electronic sounds. The overall atmosphere feels very laid-back and peaceful, making it the perfect place to end an eventful day on Koh Phangan.
Whether you simply want to enjoy the sunset, have a few drinks with friends, or relax after a beach day — the 420 Bar offers one of the nicest sunset spots on the island.
Useful Facts About 420 Bar Koh Phangan
Bars am Haad Rin Beach
Especially one day before and after the Full Moon Party, the entire Haad Rin area becomes packed with party-loving travellers from all around the world. Outside of the Full Moon Party period, however, Haad Rin usually feels much calmer and more relaxed.
The most popular bars around Haad Rin Beach outside of the Full Moon Party are definitely the Drop In Bar and the Cactus Bar.
Drop In Bar
The Drop In Bar is considered the birthplace of the world-famous Full Moon Party back in the late 1980s. At that time, free-spirited travellers and locals gathered here every month to celebrate together directly on the beach. Today, the Drop In remains the oldest and one of the most iconic bars on Haad Rin Nok Beach.
During the Full Moon Party, this place becomes “the place to be”.
But even outside of the famous party nights, the Drop In Bar remains a popular nightlife spot on Koh Phangan. The dancefloor sits directly on the soft white sand of Haad Rin Beach, while heavy bass music, fire shows, drinking games, and entertainment programs create a lively atmosphere.
Cactus Bar
The Cactus Bar is also located directly on Haad Rin Beach, only a few metres away from the Drop In Bar. Just like at the Drop In, visitors can enjoy fire shows, drinking games, and various entertainment activities. The biggest difference is the atmosphere and concept.
The Cactus Bar features one of the most powerful sound systems on Haad Rin Beach, delivering intense bass and electronic music throughout the night. At the same time, the overall setup feels more lounge-like and relaxed. Comfortable mats and cushions are placed directly on the beach, allowing visitors to sit back, enjoy a cold beer, and relax by the ocean.
Later in the evening, however, the atmosphere can become much wilder as the dancefloor fills up and the party truly begins.
Kangaroo Bar
The Kangaroo Bar is located at the northern end of Haad Rin Beach.
Built on top of the surrounding rock formations, the bar sits slightly elevated above the beach, offering fantastic panoramic views across Haad Rin Bay.
Especially during the Full Moon Party, the Kangaroo Bar serves as an excellent retreat away from the busiest crowds while still providing a great overview of the event below. The bar is also extremely popular during sunset hours, when visitors gather to enjoy cocktails while watching the colourful evening sky above the ocean.
Lighthouse Party at Rin Nai Beach
From Rin Nai Beach, a spectacular wooden walkway built across the rocks leads you towards the location of the Lighthouse Party.
Compared to the island’s larger events, the Lighthouse Party is much less known and therefore significantly less crowded. For many travellers, it still counts as a hidden gem among Koh Phangan’s party scene, especially if you prefer smaller and more intimate parties.
The venue offers a relaxed atmosphere with fantastic views towards Koh Samui, accompanied mainly by electronic music. Many visitors arrive after midnight, as the party is especially known for its beautiful sunrise atmosphere. Besides the small dancefloor, the surrounding rock formations are very popular places to sit down with a drink and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
The location itself is definitely unique and beautifully positioned.
However, during my own visit, only a relatively small number of people attended the party. If you are already in the mood for partying, it is certainly worth visiting, but in my opinion you are not necessarily missing an unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experience if you decide to skip it.
Hotel Recommendations for Koh Phangan

During both of my visits to Koh Phangan, I stayed around Rin Nai Beach.
Although the beach itself is not ideal for swimming due to its very shallow water and rocky seabed, the area offers a fantastic panoramic view towards Koh Samui.
What I personally appreciated most was the location.
Haad Rin Beach, its lively village atmosphere, the bars, restaurants, and the famous Full Moon Party are all reachable within roughly a 10-minute walk.
At the same time, Rin Nai Beach feels noticeably quieter and more relaxed. While Haad Rin can become extremely loud until the early morning hours, especially during party periods, Rin Nai Beach offers a much calmer environment for sleeping and relaxing after a night out.
Hotels I Personally Stayed At & Can Recommend
Both resorts offer different room categories ranging from mid-range to more upscale options and are relatively similar in terms of pricing and facilities.
In both accommodations, I experienced the staff as very friendly, welcoming, and helpful.
Another major advantage is that both hotels feature their own swimming pools, which is definitely a nice bonus considering that Rin Nai Beach itself is less suitable for swimming.
Personal Tip: Right along the access road on top of the small hill, you will find a great and affordable restaurant called Moon Paradise. They serve tasty Thai food at reasonable prices and also offer tickets for various parties on Koh Phangan. In addition, the shop rents scooters and appeared trustworthy and reliable during my visit.
Getting Around Koh Phangan

Rental Scooters
The best, cheapest, and most flexible way to explore Koh Phangan is definitely by rental scooter.
The roads leading to Koh Phangan’s beaches and attractions are generally well developed and easy to drive. However, especially the southern part of the island can be very hilly at times. You will quickly notice that your scooter occasionally has to work quite hard on some of the steep uphill roads — and your brakes probably will too on the way back down.
A fair rental price is usually around 150 to 200 Baht per day (approximately EUR 5 to 6), depending on the rental duration and season.
Pickup Taxis
Koh Phangan also has many so-called pickup taxis operating across the island.
As commonly seen throughout Thailand, these are pickup trucks converted into shared taxis with seating areas in the back. There are no official bus stops. Instead, you simply tell the driver when you want to get off.
At beaches, party locations, and most tourist hotspots, you will find these shared taxis almost everywhere. So there is usually no need to worry about finding transportation.
The price for a ride is generally around 150 to 200 Baht (approximately EUR 5 to 6). Most routes cost roughly the same, although with good negotiation skills you may occasionally be able to lower the price slightly.
Especially for party nights, these taxis are extremely practical and popular. You can fully enjoy the nightlife without worrying about driving a scooter after drinking alcohol.
For many of the larger parties on Koh Phangan, transportation to the event is already included in the ticket price. (Usually only the trip to the party, not the return journey.)
