Railay Beach – Paradise-Like Beaches in Thailand

Searching for the perfect tropical beach paradise? Then Railay Beach in Krabi is definitely one of Thailand’s top destinations you should not miss. Towering limestone cliffs, powdery white sand beaches, and emerald-green water create a truly breathtaking landscape that will most likely enchant you as well.

A Tropical Paradise with Heavy Tourism

Sounds perfect, right? Unfortunately, stunning places like Railay Beach rarely remain hidden gems for long. Over the years, this beautiful peninsula has become one of Thailand’s most famous tourist hotspots and is visited by large numbers of travellers every single day.

Personally, I usually prefer destinations that are less affected by mass tourism. Nevertheless, the unique scenery around Railay Beach completely captivated me during my travels.

Even though Railay can feel busy at times, it still belongs among Thailand’s absolute “must-see” destinations. The beaches here are among the most beautiful in Krabi, perhaps even among the most beautiful in all of Thailand.

Despite the large number of visitors, Railay Beach is still absolutely worth experiencing.

1. Railay Beach West – The Sunset Beach

At Railay West Beach, you will encounter one of the most breathtaking panoramas in Thailand. Towering limestone cliffs rise dramatically on both sides of the beautiful bay, creating a truly unique and unforgettable setting. Combined with the crystal-clear emerald-green sea and the powdery white sand, Railay West feels like a real tropical paradise.

The Most Beautiful Sunsets on Railay

Railay West Beach is often referred to as the “Sunset Beach”, and for very good reason. In the evening hours, countless visitors gather along the beach, spreading out towels and mats while waiting for the spectacular sunset to begin.

As the sun slowly disappears behind the stunning limestone cliffs, while you sip a refreshing drink and listen to the relaxed lounge music from the nearby beach bars, everyday life suddenly feels very far away.

Wooden longtail boats gently float on the small waves while the sky transforms into colourful shades of orange, pink, and red. Railay West Beach truly feels like paradise on earth and offers one of the most beautiful sunset settings in Thailand.

The Tourist Centre of Railay – Excellent Swimming Conditions

Railay West Beach also serves as the peninsula’s main tourist centre. Most restaurants, bars, and cafés are located directly behind the beach along the lively walking street. This makes Railay West perfect for a relaxing beach day, as everything you need is only a few steps away.

Swimming conditions here are generally excellent, although during low tide the water can become relatively shallow in some sections. The arriving and departing longtail taxi boats can occasionally become a little noisy as well.

Especially towards the rocky ends of the beach, however, the atmosphere becomes noticeably quieter, while the water often shines in particularly intense turquoise colours.

Despite the downsides caused by mass tourism, Railay West Beach completely won me over with its spectacular scenery.

Useful Facts About Railay Beach West

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Food & Drinks: Behind the beach, you will find a small walking street with many restaurants and bars

  • Info: Due to the many longtail boats operating here, the area can occasionally become quite noisy

  • Tip: If you stay overnight on Railay, visit the beach before 9 AM. At this time, the atmosphere is still peaceful and incredibly beautiful before the first day-trippers arrive by speedboat and longtail boat

  • Tip 2: Visit Railay West Beach during sunset hours to enjoy spectacular sunsets. Several relaxed beach bars are also perfect for enjoying a drink in the evening

  • Attractiveness: One of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand and the best swimming beach on Railay

2. Railay Beach East – The Less Spectacular Sister Beach

Only around 300 metres separate Railay West Beach from Railay East Beach, yet the scenery between the two sides differs dramatically. While Railay West impresses visitors with fantastic swimming conditions and breathtaking landscapes, Railay East appears much less spectacular in comparison.

Quieter, but Not Ideal for Swimming

Although the eastern side of Railay is noticeably quieter, the beach itself is not particularly suitable for swimming. On one hand, the beach is relatively narrow and offers only limited space for relaxing. On the other hand, the water remains very shallow.

Especially during low tide, swimming and even paddling at Railay East becomes almost impossible.

Nevertheless, the eastern side of the peninsula still has its own charm. Mangrove trees line parts of the shoreline, creating an interesting contrast with the clear sea and the surrounding limestone hills.

3. Tonsai Beach – Quiet & Popular Among Rock Climbers

Tonsai Beach is probably the quietest beach on the Railay Peninsula and especially popular among climbers from all around the world. If you are looking for a little escape from the otherwise busy and touristy atmosphere of Railay, this is definitely the right place for you.

The bay itself offers a spectacular setting with dramatic limestone cliffs covered in lush greenery, creating countless fantastic photo opportunities. Behind the beach, a small hippie-style village has developed over the years, where travellers gather in relaxed reggae bars and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, especially during the evenings.

A More Remote Beach – Accessible via Railay West

Compared to the other beaches on the peninsula, Tonsai Beach feels much more remote. It can only be reached on foot via a small path starting at the northern end of Railay West Beach.

This is probably one of the reasons why the beach remains significantly less crowded than Railay West or Phra Nang Beach.

The walk itself is relatively easy and takes only around 10 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take a longtail boat taxi from Railay West to Tonsai Beach, which usually costs around 50 Baht.

Not Ideal for Swimming – But Still Worth Visiting

The rocky scenery around Tonsai Beach is absolutely stunning. However, in my opinion, the beach itself is less suitable for swimming compared to Railay West Beach or Phra Nang Beach.

The shoreline slopes very gently into the sea, and during low tide the water often reaches only knee height. In addition, the sand here is noticeably coarser than on the neighbouring beaches.

Nevertheless, Tonsai Beach is still a wonderful place to spend a few relaxing hours, soak in the unique atmosphere, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Useful Facts About Tonsai Beach

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Food & Drinks: No restaurants directly on the beach. However, there are a few hotels and small restaurants behind the beach

  • Info: Tonsai Beach can only be accessed via Railay West Beach, see information above

  • Attractiveness: Impressive limestone formations and beautiful scenery. Not ideal for swimming, but very peaceful and quiet

4. Phra Nang Cave Beach – When the Postcard Becomes Reality

Phra Nang Cave Beach on Railay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Thailand. Many of the famous Thailand beach photos you see on social media, travel blogs, postcards, or posters were taken right here at Phra Nang Beach.

And honestly, it is easy to understand why. This spectacular beach offers some truly world-class scenery and photography opportunities.

Crystal-Clear Water, Limestone Cliffs & Heavy Tourism

The most beautiful section of the beach can be found near the limestone cliffs surrounding the tiny offshore island of Koh Rang Nok. The water here is incredibly clear and very shallow, allowing you to walk through the sea almost all the way to the cliffs.

Combined with the traditional longtail boats anchored nearby, the scenery creates one of the most iconic tropical beach panoramas in Thailand.

Phra Nang Beach absolutely deserves its reputation as one of the country’s most beautiful beaches. The landscape here is truly exceptional.

Unfortunately, this also means that the beach attracts large numbers of tourists throughout the day. Especially during high season, the white sandy beach can become very crowded.

The quieter areas are usually found towards the northern end of the beach.

There are no actual restaurants or bars directly at Phra Nang Beach. However, several anchored longtail boats sell fresh fruits, snacks, and cold drinks directly from the water.

Phra Nang Cave – Home of Countless Wooden Phalluses

At the southern end of the beach, you will find the famous Phra Nang Cave, also known as the “Princess Cave” or sometimes the “Penis Cave”.

Inside the cave, locals worship a fertility goddess who is believed to help couples wishing to have children. To gain her favour, visitors leave wooden phallus carvings in various sizes as offerings.

The cave is definitely one of the more unusual attractions in Thailand and adds an interesting cultural aspect to your visit.

Useful Facts About Phra Nang Cave Beach

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Food & Drinks: One restaurant is located at the southern end of the beach

  • Info: Many day tourists arrive here by speedboats and longtail boats. The noise from boat engines can occasionally become quite loud

  • Accommodation at the Beach: Villa Macaque and Villa Languor*

  • Tip: If you stay overnight on Railay, visit the beach before 9 AM. At this time, the atmosphere is still peaceful and incredibly beautiful before the first day-trippers arrive by speedboat and longtail boat

  • Attractiveness: One of the most beautiful beaches in all of Thailand and a true “must-see” destination. Excellent swimming beach on Railay

5. Railay View Point – Spectacular Views Over the Peninsula

Railay View Point rewards visitors with a breathtaking panoramic view across the entire Railay Peninsula. From the top, you can admire Railay East Beach, Railay West Beach, and Tonsai Beach from a stunning bird’s-eye perspective.

The dramatic limestone cliffs, green jungle hills, and turquoise coastline create an unforgettable landscape that almost forces you to pause for a moment and simply enjoy the scenery.

It is also one of the best photography spots on Railay for capturing incredible holiday memories.

A Challenging Climb – Especially in Flip-Flops

When I first saw the beginning of the jungle trail leading to the Railay View Point, I honestly started questioning whether climbing up there was really a good idea.

The first section of the path is not exactly encouraging. You first have to climb up a steep and rocky passage filled with slippery stones and mud. Looking down at my flip-flops certainly did not increase my confidence either.

In the end, however, my stubborn personality won the battle, and I decided to continue the climb using the ropes installed along the rocks.

This first section is definitely exhausting, sweaty, and physically demanding.

To be fair, it is technically possible to complete the trail wearing flip-flops, but I would strongly recommend bringing proper shoes with good grip as well as enough drinking water.

Once you have completed the difficult first section, the second part of the trail becomes much easier and takes approximately 15 minutes to reach the viewpoint.

So do not let the intimidating start discourage you.

From the same trail, you can also continue towards the famous Princess Lagoon. Personally, however, the path looked a little too adventurous for me while wearing flip-flops. If you plan to visit the lagoon, proper footwear is definitely essential.

Have you already visited the Princess Lagoon yourself? I would love to hear about your experience in the comments.

  • Attractiveness: Spectacular viewpoint overlooking the entire Railay Peninsula, but the trail is physically demanding

6. Enjoying the Nightlife on Railay

Railay Peninsula itself is relatively small and easy to explore. Once the many day tourists leave the area in the evening, the atmosphere becomes noticeably quieter and more relaxed.

However, this definitely does not mean that nightlife disappears on Railay. You can still enjoy some fun evenings and relaxed beach parties here.

Nightlife at Railay West

Most visitors begin their evenings at Railay West Beach while enjoying the colourful sunset with a refreshing drink in hand.

The atmosphere here is usually relaxed, with smaller beach gatherings where travellers bring their own drinks and music. Occasionally, Full Moon and Half Moon parties also take place at Railay West Beach, although on a much smaller scale compared to the famous parties on Koh Phangan.

Directly behind Railay West Beach, you will find the lively Walking Street, home to various bars and restaurants offering everything from live music to electronic beats.

Relaxed Bar Vibes at Railay East

The nightlife atmosphere at Railay East Beach is generally much more laid-back and relaxed. Expect chilled Bob Marley vibes, reggae music, and cosy bars where you can simply unwind with a cold drink and enjoy the evening.

  • Bamboo Bar
  • Flame Tree Bar & Restaurant

Railay East Beach

  • Joy Beach bar
  • Lucky Restaurant & Last Bar
  • Skunk Bar
  • Tew Lay Bar

Hotel Recommendations for Railay Beach

On Railay West, you will generally find accommodation in the higher price range compared to Railay East. Especially around Railay East, the atmosphere is significantly quieter and more relaxed than on the western side of the peninsula.

Another possible option is staying near Ao Nang Beach on the mainland, where you will find a much larger selection of hotels and accommodations. However, you would then need to travel to Railay by longtail boat each time, as Ao Nang is located on the mainland.

!!! Tip !!!

No matter which accommodation you choose, book as early as possible! Especially during the main season between November and February, many hotels and resorts are often fully booked up to six months in advance.

Where I Stayed

During my three-day stay on Railay, I booked my accommodation at the Avatar Railay Resort.

The hotel features very friendly staff and is located in one of the quieter areas of Railay, directly near Railay East Beach.

The rooms were modern, stylish, and functionally furnished. The resort also features a medium-sized swimming pool located between the two main buildings, which is perfect for relaxing and swimming after a long day exploring the peninsula.

Overall, the entire resort appeared very clean and well maintained.

Although Railay East Beach itself is not the best beach on the peninsula, you can easily reach Railay West Beach, Tonsai Beach, and Phra Nang Beach within approximately 10 to 15 minutes on foot.

In return, the surroundings around Railay East are much quieter, while several relaxed bars are located only a short walking distance from the resort.

Take a look at this accommodation — I can honestly recommend it with a clear conscience.

Getting Around Railay Beach

The Railay Peninsula is completely free of traffic, which is hardly surprising given its relatively small size. As a result, you will explore the entire area on foot — but honestly, that is part of Railay’s charm.

Fortunately, the peninsula is very compact, and all beaches, viewpoints, bars, restaurants, and attractions can usually be reached within approximately 15 minutes of walking.

This makes Railay an ideal destination for travellers who simply want to slow down, enjoy the tropical atmosphere, and explore the area without scooters, taxis, or busy streets.

How to Get to Railay Beach

From Krabi Town to Railay Beach

There are two main ways to reach Railay Beach from Krabi Town.

The first option is travelling to Ao Nang Beach first and then taking a longtail boat from Ao Nang to Railay. (See information below under Ao Nang.)

The second option is departing directly from Klong Jilard Pier, located around four kilometres outside Krabi Town centre. Most boats from there arrive at Railay East Beach.

This option is especially recommended if your accommodation is located near Railay East Beach. For day trips, however, the Ao Nang route is generally the more convenient choice.

Tickets can also be booked online in advance.*

Von Ao Nang zum Railay Beach

From Ao Nang Beach, near the Burger King area, you can take a longtail boat taxi to Railay West Beach for approximately 100 Baht.

A one-way trip to Railay East Beach costs around 150 Baht.

The boat ride takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes and usually starts operating around 8 AM.

The last longtail boat from Railay West back to Ao Nang generally departs around 6 PM. However, it is always best to confirm the exact departure times locally, as schedules in Thailand are sometimes interpreted rather “flexibly”.

From Koh Lanta to Railay Beach

During the main season, ferries operate daily from Saladan Pier on Koh Lanta to Railay Beach. The ferry usually departs Koh Lanta at 1:30 PM. The journey takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes and costs approximately 550 Baht per person.

Tickets can also be booked online in advance.*

From Koh Phi Phi to Railay Beach

You can also reach Railay Beach from Koh Phi Phi by speedboat in approximately 40 minutes. The speedboats usually depart daily from Koh Phi Phi at 1 PM and 3:30 PM. The price is approximately 1,000 Baht per person.

Tickets can also be booked online in advance.*

Recommended Length of Stay for Railay Beach

You can easily explore the entire Railay Peninsula as a day trip. One popular option is staying in Krabi near Ao Nang Beach and visiting Railay for a few hours or a full day by longtail boat.

However, staying overnight on Railay itself also comes with several advantages. Early in the morning and during the evening hours, when most day visitors have not yet arrived or already left, you can enjoy the beaches in a much more peaceful atmosphere and sometimes almost entirely to yourself.

In my opinion, around two nights on Railay are ideal. This gives you enough time to visit all beaches, take a kayak tour, hike to the viewpoint, and enjoy relaxed sunset evenings with a few delicious drinks.

Personally, I would not stay much longer than that, as the peninsula itself can be explored relatively quickly and there is a chance that it may start to feel repetitive after a few days.

A great option is combining your Railay stay with a small island-hopping trip to Koh Lanta and/or Koh Phi Phi.

Best Time to Visit Railay Beach

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Railay Beach is between November and approximately mid-March. During this period, rainfall is at its lowest and temperatures are warm but usually still pleasant and not excessively hot.

However, this is also the peak travel season. Accommodation prices are at their highest, and the beaches can become extremely crowded — perhaps even too crowded for some travellers.

If possible, I would personally recommend visiting Railay either at the end of October or between the end of March and mid-April.

During these periods, the weather is often still very stable, while the enormous crowds have already decreased significantly. In addition, accommodation prices are usually noticeably lower compared to the peak season.

Conclusion About Railay Beach’s Beaches & Attractions

Railay Beach in Krabi is undoubtedly one of the most famous and popular attractions in all of Thailand. As a result, the peninsula in southern Thailand attracts large numbers of visitors every single day.

Normally, I personally prefer destinations that are less touristy and less crowded. However, Railay truly deserves its reputation as one of Thailand’s most visited places.

The breathtaking natural scenery with its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise water, and paradise-like beaches is simply unique. For me personally, Railay Beach is one of the most beautiful travel destinations in Thailand and definitely a true “must-see”.

Unfortunately, the large number of visitors can occasionally become a little overwhelming. Especially the constant noise from longtail boats and boat engines sometimes disturbed the otherwise peaceful atmosphere.

If possible, I would highly recommend staying one or two nights directly on the peninsula.

Before 9 AM and after approximately 5 PM, the number of visitors decreases significantly, as most day tourists are no longer around. During these quieter hours, you may even get lucky enough to enjoy Railay’s paradise-like beaches almost entirely to yourself for a short moment.
