Over the years, Koh Samui has developed into one of Thailand’s most visited islands. Even though you will hardly find completely deserted beaches anymore, the island still fulfils everything you would expect from a true tropical paradise.
Here, you will encounter powdery white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, an excellent tourist infrastructure, beautiful temples, as well as accommodation options ranging from budget-friendly guesthouses to luxurious resorts.
Whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday or vibrant nightlife and parties, Koh Samui offers something for every type of traveller.
Koh Samui is also an excellent starting point for island hopping adventures to nearby islands such as Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.

1. Chaweng Beach Samui – The Lively Main Beach for All Ages
The Chaweng Beach on Koh Samui is probably the island’s most famous and liveliest beach. Stretching over several kilometres, this long sandy beach offers a wide variety of atmospheres, ranging from relaxed and peaceful sections to vibrant party hotspots.
Especially around the famous Ark Bar, you will encounter a younger crowd already getting into the party mood during the afternoon hours. This part of Chaweng Beach becomes particularly lively and energetic throughout the evening and night. Quieter sections can mainly be found at the northern and southern ends of the beach, which are especially popular with families and travellers looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Party Atmosphere at Chaweng Beach
The legendary Ark Bar is one of the island’s most popular party spots and definitely worth visiting if you enjoy nightlife. From late afternoon until deep into the night, visitors celebrate here with cold beers, cocktails, and music directly on the beach.
One of the coolest things about the Ark Bar is the dance floor located directly on the soft white sand, allowing you to party barefoot or in flip-flops while dancing to tropical beats under the night sky.
The neighbouring beach bars are generally a little calmer and perfect for enjoying a relaxed drink while listening to chillout music. Along the entire Chaweng Beach, you will also find several laid-back bars and lounges.
Directly behind the beach lies the lively town centre of Chaweng, where you will find countless restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shopping opportunities, and even a small red-light district. Especially around the centre, the nightlife continues until the early morning hours, which means the Chaweng Beach Road is rarely completely quiet.
If you are looking for a more peaceful stay, the northern and southern ends of Chaweng Beach are definitely the better choice.
Chaweng Beach – White Sand, Turquoise Water & Excellent Swimming Conditions
Chaweng Beach is one of the best swimming beaches on Koh Samui. The beach features soft powdery white sand and is pleasantly wide in most sections, offering plenty of space for sunbathing and relaxing.
The crystal-clear sea glows in beautiful turquoise colours under the Thai sun and is ideal for long swims. Thanks to the shallow entry into the water, Chaweng Beach is also very suitable for inexperienced swimmers and families with children.
Water sports enthusiasts will also find plenty to do here, including jet skiing, wakeboarding, parasailing, and diving schools.
Even though Chaweng Beach is the definition of mass tourism on Koh Samui, it still offers an enjoyable holiday experience. Due to the beach’s large size, visitor crowds spread out relatively well. Especially the wide variety of entertainment, restaurants, nightlife, and beautiful beach scenery make Chaweng Beach one of the best tourist beaches in Thailand.

2. Bophut Beach on Koh Samui – Where Beach Life Meets Great Food
Bophut Beach impresses visitors with its golden, kilometre-long sandy beach. Compared to Chaweng Beach, life here feels much calmer and more relaxed. The beach is generally less crowded and offers a more peaceful atmosphere. Especially during the low season, you may even have large parts of this Koh Samui beach almost entirely to yourself.
Around Bophut, you will encounter travellers of all ages, solo adventurers, couples, and families alike. The atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed, while a few cosy beach bars invite visitors to unwind with a drink while enjoying the view towards Koh Phangan.
The sand at Bophut Beach is slightly coarser than at Chaweng Beach, but it still feels pleasant under your feet. The beach slopes gently into the sea, making it ideal for swimming and relaxing in the water. During low tide, however, especially between April and November, the sea can retreat significantly and make swimming more difficult in certain sections.
Fisherman’s Village – A Paradise for Food Lovers
Bophut Beach did not become famous only because of its swimming conditions, but mainly because of its fantastic culinary scene.
Located roughly in the middle of the beach, directly behind the shoreline, you will find the well-known Fisherman’s Village. This area is considered one of the most charming and traditional places on Koh Samui and is home to several historic wooden houses that now accommodate excellent seafood restaurants, cafés, boutique shops, souvenir stores, and bars.
Especially on Fridays, the village transforms into one of Koh Samui’s most popular evening attractions thanks to the weekly night market starting around 7 PM. Along the pedestrian street, you can enjoy a huge variety of delicious street food dishes from countless local vendors.
Bophut Beach is the perfect destination if you are looking for a combination of relaxation, entertainment, and excellent food. The beach offers a fantastic mix of laid-back island vibes and culinary experiences.

3. Lamai Beach Koh Samui – A Picture-Perfect Beach Stretching for Kilometres
Lamai Beach stretches over several kilometres and offers a fantastic tropical panorama consisting of crystal-clear turquoise water, golden sand, and swaying palm trees. In my opinion, Lamai Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Samui.
Apparently, many other travellers share this opinion, as Lamai Beach is also one of the island’s most popular holiday destinations. As a result, you will find a wide variety of accommodations here. Fortunately, most resorts and hotels have been integrated quite nicely into the lush green surroundings, meaning you will not encounter huge concrete hotel blocks along the beach.
The crowd at Lamai Beach is a relaxed mix of younger and older travellers, couples, solo adventurers, and many families.
Excellent Swimming Conditions at Lamai Beach
For me personally, Lamai Beach offers some of the best swimming conditions on Koh Samui. The beach slopes gently into the sea, but after just a few metres, you can already enjoy ideal swimming conditions in the crystal-clear water.
Although Lamai Beach is quite popular and busy, the crowds spread out well along the approximately three-kilometre-long beach, meaning you can still find quieter areas to relax.
The atmosphere feels lively yet relaxed, making Lamai Beach perfect both for enjoying excellent swimming conditions and simply unwinding in a tropical setting.
Wide Range of Water Sports Activities
Along the beach, you will find a broad selection of water sports activities such as jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing, stand-up paddleboarding, diving schools, and many more offers.
If you enjoy water sports and activities, Lamai Beach will definitely not disappoint you.
Hin Ta & Hin Yai – One of Koh Samui’s Most Famous Attractions
At the southern end of Lamai Beach, you will find two of Koh Samui’s most famous attractions: the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks, also known as the “Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks”.
These unusual rock formations resemble male and female body parts and are linked to a local legend. According to the story, an elderly couple accompanied their son on a boat journey to a neighbouring province where he planned to marry his beloved. During the journey, their boat capsized and the parents sadly lost their lives at sea. Legend says that they eventually transformed into the rocks visible today.

4. Thong Takhian Beach (Silver Beach) – A Dreamy Rocky Bay
Surrounded by picturesque rock formations, the beautiful Thong Takhian Beach, also known as Silver Beach, is one of the true tropical highlights on Koh Samui.
Although this little paradise measures only around 250 metres in length, it fulfils almost every expectation of a dream beach. Here, you will encounter fine powdery white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, swaying palm trees, and an enchanting rocky backdrop that creates a truly idyllic atmosphere.
Thong Takhian Beach is the perfect place for sunbathing, swimming, relaxing, and snorkelling.
Great Conditions During High Tide – Less Ideal at Low Tide
During high tide, Silver Beach offers very good swimming conditions. However, during low tide, the sea retreats significantly, transforming the beach from a swimming paradise into more of a shallow paddling area.
Nevertheless, even during low tide, the rocky areas on the sides of the beach still offer decent snorkelling opportunities.
No Longer a Hidden Gem – Very Popular with Visitors
Only three resorts are located directly at Silver Beach, and there is not much additional tourist infrastructure nearby. If you are now hoping to discover a completely hidden and deserted beach on Koh Samui, I unfortunately have to disappoint you.
A place as beautiful as Silver Beach naturally does not stay secret for long, and therefore the beach attracts quite a high number of visitors throughout the day.
Despite its popularity, Silver Beach remains one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Samui and is definitely worth visiting because of its breathtaking scenery.

5. Lipa Noi Beach – Peaceful and Perfect for Relaxing
Lipa Noi Beach is located on Koh Samui’s west coast, an area that has not yet been overrun by tourism like other parts of the island. As a result, the atmosphere at Lipa Noi Beach feels much calmer and more relaxed, making it an excellent choice for travellers seeking peace and tranquillity.
You will not find a vibrant nightlife scene or wild beach parties here. In return, however, you have to accept a slightly smaller selection of restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops, as the area remains relatively undeveloped compared to Chaweng or Lamai. Accommodation options, on the other hand, are available in sufficient numbers and suit almost every budget.
Perfect Swimming Conditions in a Relaxed Atmosphere
The somewhat secluded location of Lipa Noi Beach benefits the overall atmosphere tremendously. Although several hotels and resorts are located along the beach, the visitor numbers remain pleasantly low.
Especially outside the main travel season, it can even happen that you have large parts of this Koh Samui beach almost entirely to yourself.
The golden and fine sandy beach stretches over several kilometres and is one of the longest beaches on Koh Samui. In some sections, however, the beach becomes relatively narrow.
One major advantage of Lipa Noi Beach is the complete absence of rocks and coral reefs in the water, creating ideal swimming conditions. The sea remains very shallow and the beach slopes gently into the water, making it particularly suitable for families with children.

6. Lad Koh Viewpoint – One of the Best Viewpoints on Koh Samui
Ever wondered what Chaweng Beach looks like from a bird’s-eye perspective? Unfortunately, teaching you how to fly is not part of my skill set — but giving travel tips definitely is.
One of the best panoramic viewpoints on Koh Samui is the Lad Koh Viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy a breathtaking view across the entire Chaweng Beach, with its white sandy shoreline and deep blue sea stretching along the coast.
The viewpoint itself is located directly next to the island’s main road and is therefore very easy to access. A small shaded pavilion offers a pleasant place to take a break while exploring Koh Samui.
In addition, you will find public toilets, a small park area, and several benches in the shade, making Lad Koh Viewpoint a perfect stop during an island road trip.
A small path with several staircases also leads down to the rocky platforms below the viewpoint, where you can enjoy even more impressive coastal views and fantastic photo opportunities.

7. Wat Racha Thammaram & Wat Sila Ngu
Located directly next to the main road circling Koh Samui, you will find the temple grounds of Wat Sila Ngu and Wat Racha Thammaram. Due to their unique appearance, these temples are also occasionally used as filming locations for Thai television productions.
Most travellers visiting Thailand are familiar with the country’s many temples decorated with lavish golden ornaments. Wat Racha Thammaram, however, offers a rather unusual and distinctive appearance.
The temple stands out with its uncommon reddish brick-coloured design, making it one of the more unique temples in Thailand. Inside, Wat Racha Thammaram may not appear as grand and extravagant as some other temple complexes, but it still impresses visitors with its detailed sculptures, artistic illustrations, and beautiful atmosphere.
Personally, I found the intricate relief artworks decorating the temple walls to be the true highlights of the complex.
The Famous Snake Staircase
Towards the sea, you will discover a golden temple structure with a small viewing platform. Directly behind this chedi temple, an impressive snake staircase leads down towards the ocean.
As you walk down the stairs to the lower level, two golden cobra snakes accompany you on both sides, ending in magnificent cobra heads. This dramatic staircase is an incredibly photogenic spot and one of the area’s most fascinating features.
At the bottom level, you will find a small Buddhist cemetery where the ashes of deceased people are stored inside miniature chedis. You will also encounter a small pond decorated with statues, where relatives leave offerings for the deceased.
The entire temple complex radiates a peaceful, spiritual, and almost mystical atmosphere.

8. Guan Yu Shrine – The God of War
Guan Yu was a Chinese general who lived around 1,800 years ago and is today worshipped as the God of War. He played an important role during a Chinese civil war that eventually led to the decline of the Han Dynasty and the beginning of the period known as the “Three Kingdoms”.
Today, Guan Yu symbolises loyalty, justice, bravery, and honesty. In Taoism, he is regarded as a protective deity, while in Chinese Buddhism he is worshipped as a Bodhisattva.
To honour Guan Yu, local Chinese residents built this impressive shrine in 2014, which is considered one of the largest Guan Yu statues in the world.
The gigantic statue, dressed in dark green and golden battle armour with its determined facial expression, creates a truly powerful and humbling impression.
You can reach the temple complex itself via the two staircases located behind the Guan Yu statue. The area includes additional statues, wooden pillars, traditional buildings, and decorative elements that further enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the site.

9. Wat Hin Lad & Hin Lad Waterfall
You can reach the Hin Lad Waterfall via an approximately three-kilometre-long jungle trail. Along the way, you will encounter several small natural pools inviting visitors to cool off and swim in the middle of the tropical forest.
A visit is especially worthwhile after periods of heavy rainfall, as the waterfall then carries significantly more water and becomes far more impressive.
On the way to the waterfall, you will also pass the small forest temple Wat Hin Lad. From the main parking area, you can reach the temple by crossing a decorative bridge over a small stream.
Surrounding the temple complex, you will discover beautiful tropical flowers, lush plants, towering trees, and a natural rock pool that is home to numerous fish.
The entire area offers a peaceful jungle atmosphere and provides a refreshing contrast to Koh Samui’s busy beaches and tourist hotspots.

Hotel Recommendations for Koh Samui
Accommodation options on Koh Samui are about as numerous as the grains of sand on the island’s beaches. And as the saying goes: the more choices you have, the harder the decision becomes.
To give you some inspiration for choosing the right place to stay, I would like to introduce you to three hotels that I personally stayed at and can genuinely recommend.
Lub d – The Perfect Accommodation for a Party Beach Holiday
Lub d mainly attracts a younger crowd and is especially popular with travellers looking for nightlife and parties. The hotel is located directly on the powdery white Chaweng Beach and only a few metres away from Koh Samui’s most famous beach bar, the Ark Bar.
The lively town centre with many additional bars and nightlife options can be reached within just a five-minute walk.
Despite its very central location, Lub d is situated slightly outside the main party zone, which means the atmosphere remains pleasantly quiet during the night. A good night’s sleep is therefore still guaranteed.
The hotel offers a wide range of accommodation categories, including:
- Shared dormitories with multiple bed options
- Female-only dormitory rooms
- Mid-range king-size bedrooms
- Family rooms
In addition to a stylish swimming pool with a glass front overlooking the sea and Chaweng Beach, the hotel also offers plenty of sun loungers with umbrellas directly on the beach, as well as a relaxed chillout area with hammocks and a pool bar.
Banana Fan Sea Resort – Perfect for a Relaxing Holiday
Banana Fan Sea Resort is located along a quieter section of Chaweng Beach and is therefore an excellent choice for travellers looking to enjoy a relaxing holiday on Koh Samui.
The resort belongs to the upper mid-range category, and the atmosphere mainly attracts couples, families, and travellers in the middle to older age groups.
The staff at Banana Fan Sea Resort is exceptionally friendly, while the bungalow-style rooms feature a stylish and well-equipped interior. This is definitely one of those places where you immediately feel comfortable and welcome.
In addition, the resort offers a beautiful swimming pool as well as a restaurant serving delicious dishes from all around the world.
Samui Green Hotel
Samui Green Hotel is a great choice for budget-conscious travellers visiting Koh Samui. The rooms offer a practical and functional interior, while the hotel itself is located in a very central area directly next to a 7-Eleven convenience store.
Although the hotel does not provide direct beach access, Chaweng Beach can easily be reached within just a few minutes on foot, approximately a five-minute walk away.
The popular party area around the famous Ark Bar is about 20 minutes away on foot or less than five minutes by taxi.
The staff at Samui Green Hotel was extremely friendly during my stay, and the hotel’s restaurant serves delicious and affordable meals.
If you are looking to save some money, stay in a central location, but still sleep slightly outside the loudest party areas, then Samui Green Hotel could definitely be a good option for you.
Getting Around Koh Samui
Scooters & Motorbikes – Experience the Island with Freedom
One of the most popular ways to get around Koh Samui is undoubtedly by scooter or motorbike. Rental shops can be found almost everywhere on the island, giving you the freedom to explore beaches, temples, waterfalls, and viewpoints at your own pace.
However, Koh Samui is not necessarily an easy place for inexperienced scooter riders. Serious accidents happen regularly on the island, especially due to steep roads, heavy traffic, and sometimes unpredictable driving behaviour. Therefore, always drive carefully and never forget to wear a helmet.
Tuk-Tuks – Traditional Rides with Local Charm
For shorter distances and a more authentic island feeling, tuk-tuks are a fun and popular option. Before starting your ride, you should always negotiate the price to avoid misunderstandings later on.
The open-sided tuk-tuks allow you to enjoy the warm tropical air and the lively atmosphere while driving through the streets of Koh Samui.
Taxis – Comfortable & Stress-Free
If you prefer comfort and convenience, taxis are widely available across Koh Samui. Make sure to agree on the fare before the journey starts or ask the driver to use the taximeter.
Taxis are especially useful for longer distances or when travelling with larger luggage.
How to Get to Koh Samui
As the saying goes, many roads lead to Rome — and the same applies to Koh Samui. Here are the most common and convenient ways to reach the island.
From Bangkok to Koh Samui
The fastest and most comfortable way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui is by plane from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. The best flight connections are usually offered by Bangkok Airways.
Since Bangkok Airways owns Koh Samui Airport and therefore holds a monopoly on this route, flight prices are generally relatively expensive compared to other domestic flights in Thailand. Expect prices between approximately €150 and €200 for a return ticket. The flight itself takes a little over one hour.
Flights depart almost every hour from Suvarnabhumi Airport. If your budget allows it, this is definitely the easiest and quickest way to reach Koh Samui.
A cheaper alternative is travelling from Bangkok’s old Don Mueang Airport. Airlines such as AirAsia and Nok Air offer flights to Surat Thani. From there, you continue by shuttle bus to the ferry terminal in Donsak before taking the ferry to Koh Samui.
This budget-friendly option takes around five hours in total.
Ferry prices are approximately €8, with departures from Donsak usually operating at:
- 10:00 AM
- 12:00 PM
- 2:00 PM
- 4:00 PM
From Koh Phangan to Koh Samui
You can also easily reach Koh Samui from Koh Phangan via Thong Sala Pier. The ferry crossing takes approximately 90 minutes and costs around €7. Tickets can also be booked online in advance.*
By Ferry
- Departure times: 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 5:00 PM
- Duration: around 90 minutes
- Price: approximately €7
By Speedboat
- Departure times: 8:00 AM, 12:30 PM, and 4:30 PM
- Duration: around 30 minutes
- Price: approximately €10
Best Time to Visit Koh Samui’s Beaches & Attractions
The best months to visit Koh Samui are generally between January and March. During this period, rainfall is relatively low and temperatures are usually around 30°C, creating ideal conditions for beach holidays and island exploration.
The months from April to August are also suitable for travelling to Koh Samui. However, temperatures during this time can occasionally climb close to 40°C, combined with high humidity. If you do not mind hot and tropical weather, these months can still be a great option.
One advantage of travelling outside the main season from January to March is that accommodation prices are often lower and the island becomes noticeably less crowded with tourists.
The least suitable months for visiting Koh Samui are usually between October and December, as this period marks the rainy season. During these months, heavy rainfall and even monsoon-like weather conditions can occur.
Recommended Length of Stay for Koh Samui’s Beaches & Attractions
For nightlife lovers, Koh Samui also offers countless party opportunities, whether at the famous ARK Bar or many other bars and clubs around Chaweng Beach.
Koh Samui is also an excellent starting point for island hopping adventures in Thailand. If you have around three weeks available, you could either spend a few days in Bangkok first or begin your island trip directly in Koh Samui.
One possible itinerary would be:
- 1 week on Koh Samui
- 1 week on Koh Phangan
- 1 week on Koh Tao
Alternatively, you could shorten your stay on Koh Tao to around four days and instead spend a few extra days exploring Bangkok and/or the historic city of Ayutthaya.
Conclusion About Koh Samui’s Beaches & Attractions
Of course, Koh Samui is anything but a hidden gem nowadays and has become one of the most visited islands in Thailand. The island offers excellent infrastructure, while travelling there is comfortable and straightforward.
There are many direct flights from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, as well as numerous connections with stopovers in the Middle East. In addition, flights between Bangkok and Koh Samui operate very frequently throughout the day.
Overall, I have visited Koh Samui three times myself, and the island has always managed to convince me. Especially as a solo traveller, it is very easy to meet other people here, while the island offers a fantastic mix for many different travel styles.
You will find peaceful beaches with very few visitors, but also lively tourist areas and party hotspots if that is what you are looking for.
Personally, I usually prefer quieter islands that are still less discovered by tourism. Nevertheless, Koh Samui offers such a balanced mix of relaxation, nightlife, beautiful beaches, and activities that it still managed to win me over.
Koh Samui is also home to several excellent swimming beaches. Especially if you are travelling to Thailand for the very first time, Koh Samui is definitely a fantastic place to get familiar with the beauty and atmosphere of Southeast Asia.
