Discover the Tropical Beaches and Attractions of Koh Tao

Koh Tao is a true tropical paradise and offers perfect conditions for beach lovers, snorkellers and divers. With its stunning nature, lush green hills, beautiful bays framed by dramatic rock formations and crystal-clear turquoise water, Koh Tao is considered one of the most beautiful island destinations in Thailand.

The island offers everything you need for a dream holiday. Whether you want to relax on peaceful sandy beaches or party until sunrise at Sairee Beach, there is something here for every type of traveller. Snorkelling tours and island excursions can also easily be booked online in advance.

The nearby island Koh Nang Yuan is an absolute gem and one of the most unique places on the planet. Its famous sandbank viewpoint is among the most photographed spots in Thailand.

By the way, Koh Tao can perfectly be combined with a trip to Koh Phangan or Koh Samui.

1. Sairee Beach – Koh Tao’s Main Tourist Area and Nightlife Hotspot

Sairee Beach has developed into the main tourist area of Koh Tao. Behind the beach, you will find a lively village filled with restaurants, bars and resorts ranging from budget-friendly accommodations to more luxurious options. If you want to enjoy a delicious cocktail at a beach bar while watching the sunset before partying into the night, then Sairee Beach is definitely the place to be.

The nightlife at Sairee Beach usually starts around 9 PM. Many bars host parties featuring DJs, fire shows and a vibrant atmosphere directly on the beach. Popular nightlife spots include the Sun Dance, FIZZ and Lotus Bar.

The Longest Beach on Koh Tao

Sairee Beach is the longest beach on Koh Tao and becomes particularly wide during low tide. It is especially popular among younger travellers and backpackers. The sea is crystal-clear and turquoise, although there are better beaches on Koh Tao for swimming. The water remains very shallow for quite a distance, often only reaching knee height after walking several metres into the sea. Further out, you will also encounter a few rocks and stones in the water.

Sairee Beach truly comes alive during sunset, which is considered one of the most beautiful on Koh Tao. At this time, the beach bars fill with visitors enjoying the relaxed tropical atmosphere.

Useful Facts About Sairee Beach

2. John Suwan Viewpoint – The Most Beautiful Viewpoint on Koh Tao

John Suwan Viewpoint is one of the most famous and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful viewpoints on Koh Tao. Due to its popularity, the viewpoint can become quite busy, especially during the daytime. Therefore, a bit of patience may be needed if you want to secure the perfect spot for your travel photos. Despite the crowds, visiting John Suwan Viewpoint is definitely one of the must-do activities on Koh Tao.

The hike to the top takes around 20 minutes and can be a little sweaty and challenging at times. Parts of the trail lead over large rocks, but ropes attached along the path help you climb safely and without much difficulty.

Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with an absolutely spectacular panorama. From the top of the hill, you can enjoy breathtaking views overlooking Taa Toh Bay, Shark Bay and Shark Island. It is easily one of the best photo spots on the island and perfect for stunning Instagram pictures.

The best place to park your scooter is near Freedom Beach. After the hike, the beach is perfect for relaxing and cooling off with a refreshing swim in the sea. In many cases, an entrance fee of around 50 Baht is charged for visiting the viewpoint.

Useful Facts About John Suwan Viewpoint

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Parking: It is best to park near Freedom Beach.

  • Food & Drinks: Available at Freedom Beach.

  • Entrance Fee:50 Baht (approx. EUR 1.30)

  • Attractiveness: Spectacular 360-degree panorama and one of the most worthwhile attractions on Koh Tao.

  • Info: Bring proper footwear for the hike, as flip-flops are not the best choice

  • Info 2: Combine your visit with Freedom Beach. The beach also charges an entrance fee of 50 Baht, but this already includes parking as well as access to the viewpoint

3. Freedom Beach – The Perfect Refreshment After Visiting John Suwan Viewpoint

Freedom Beach is a popular stop for visitors who have previously completed the sweaty hike up to John Suwan Viewpoint and are looking for a well-deserved break afterwards. Freedom Beach belongs to the Taatoh Resort & Freedom Beach Resort, but it can be visited by all travellers for an entrance fee of 50 Baht.

The small beach, stretching around 50 metres, is located in a beautiful tropical setting surrounded by palm trees and shady vegetation. The soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise sea and surrounding rock formations create a truly stunning paradise-like scenery.

Freedom Beach is not the best beach on Koh Tao for swimming, as the water remains very shallow and the beach borders directly onto a small coral reef. However, it is an excellent spot for snorkelling enthusiasts. Make sure to bring your snorkel mask and fins to explore the colourful underwater world.

From Freedom Beach, you can also walk along a wooden boardwalk built beside the rocky coastline towards the neighbouring Taa Toh Beach. Along the way, you will enjoy impressive views overlooking Chalok Baan Kao Bay.

Useful Facts About Freedom Beach Koh Tao

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Parking: Plenty of parking available

  • Food & Drinks: There is a beach bar belonging to the nearby resort

  • Entrance Fee: 50 Baht (approx. EUR 1.30), including access to the viewpoint

  • Attractiveness: Stunning beach on Koh Tao, beautifully located within a spectacular bay. The beach slopes very gently into the sea and is only partially suitable for swimming

4. Taa Toh Beach – Perfect for Relaxing

From Freedom Beach, you can reach the neighbouring Taa Toh Beach via the wooden boardwalk along the rocky coastline. Although the beach is relatively small, it offers a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. Similar to Freedom Beach, the sea here remains quite shallow, but Taa Toh Beach is slightly better suited for swimming.

The scenery at Taa Toh Beach is absolutely stunning, featuring spectacular rock formations and breathtaking views overlooking Chalok Baan Kao Bay. The white sandy beach and crystal-clear turquoise water create the perfect tropical setting.

Compared to Freedom Beach, Taa Toh Beach is usually a little less crowded, making it an ideal place to relax and unwind. Officially, an additional entrance fee of 50 Baht is charged for visiting the beach. However, during my stay on Koh Tao, no entrance fees were collected at either Freedom Beach or Taa Toh Beach.

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Parking: Plenty of parking available

  • Food & Drinks: Available at the nearby resort

5. Chalok Baan Kao Bay – Reggae-Style Beach

Chalok Baan Kao Bay is located within a large bay and borders the nearby Taa Toh Beach. Compared to some of the more famous beaches on Koh Tao, this beach is usually less crowded, making it a great place to relax and unwind.

The white sandy beach is surrounded by lush green hills and offers a spectacular panorama with crystal-clear turquoise water. However, just like many other beaches on Koh Tao, the sea here remains extremely shallow. During low tide, the water is often only deep enough to cool your feet, although it is still great for wading through the warm sea.

Several resorts, restaurants and cosy reggae bars have settled around the beach, creating a laid-back chillout atmosphere. Even though the beach may not offer perfect swimming conditions, it is an ideal place to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and fantastic scenery while sipping a refreshing drink.

Useful Facts About Chalok Baan Kao Bay

6. Shark Bay – The Beach for the Brave

Shark Bay, also known as Thian Og Bay or Haad Tien, is one of the most beautiful beaches on Koh Tao and is especially popular among divers and snorkellers. This is mainly because some of Koh Tao’s best snorkelling spots are located around Shark Bay. Most snorkelling and boat tours on the island also include this bay as one of their main stops.

The underwater world here is incredibly rich in marine life. Although some of the coral reefs have unfortunately suffered over the years, you can still spot colourful tropical fish and, with a bit of luck, even blacktip reef sharks and sea turtles.

The best snorkelling areas can be found at the rocky western and eastern ends of the beach, as well as around the nearby Shark Island. You can even reach Shark Island by kayak from the beach within around 10 to 15 minutes. Kayaks can be rented directly at the beach for approximately 100 Baht per hour.

The beach itself stretches for around 200 metres and features powder-soft white sand surrounded by lush green hills. Bushes and palm trees provide several shaded areas along the beach. As is common on Koh Tao, the crystal-clear sea remains relatively shallow close to the shore. Nevertheless, Shark Bay offers better swimming conditions than beaches such as Freedom Beach or Chalok Baan Kao Bay.

Shark Bay is a private beach belonging to the The Haad Tien Beach Resort and the connected Beach Club by Haadtien. Therefore, external visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of 100 Baht.

7. Sai Daeng Beach – Located in a Stunning Bay

Sai Daeng Beach is located in a breathtaking rocky bay surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, palm trees and plenty of natural shade. The atmosphere at Sai Daeng Beach is peaceful and relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a quiet beach day.

The approximately 300-metre-long beach features crystal-clear turquoise water and is ideal for both swimming and snorkelling. The coral reef begins just a few metres from the white sandy beach and offers a beautiful underwater world filled with marine life.

Even the journey to Sai Daeng Beach feels incredibly tropical, as the road winds through jungle-covered hills before reaching the beach area. The road ends at a parking area that also serves as an amazing viewpoint. From here, you can enjoy spectacular views overlooking Sai Daeng Bay all the way to Shark Island. You should definitely stop here for a moment and take in the stunning scenery.

8. Tanote Beach – Perfect for Snorkelling

Tanote Beach is located in a breathtaking tropical bay surrounded by massive and picturesque rock formations. Spending a few relaxing hours here sunbathing, snorkelling or swimming in the crystal-clear sea is almost guaranteed in this stunning scenery.

The approximately 300-metre-long beach is relatively peaceful and especially popular among snorkelling enthusiasts. Just offshore, you will find an excellent coral reef offering a beautiful underwater world filled with colourful marine life. Tanote Beach is also one of the better beaches on Koh Tao for swimming and bathing.

Located on Koh Tao’s less touristy east coast, Tanote Beach feels pleasantly remote and relaxed. Far away from the island’s busy nightlife and tourist hotspots, you can enjoy a laid-back tropical atmosphere here.

To explore this part of the island, renting a scooter is highly recommended. Apart from the few beachfront resorts, there is hardly any additional infrastructure around Tanote Beach

Useful Facts About Tanote Beach

9. Ao Leuk Beach – Cozy and Peaceful

Ao Leuk Beach is one of the few beaches located on the east coast of Koh Tao. Compared to many other beaches on the island, the approximately 300-metre-long beach is relatively wide and offers plenty of space to relax.

Ao Leuk Beach is surrounded by lush green hills and impressive rock formations. The beach itself consists of slightly coarser sand and features crystal-clear turquoise water with surprisingly good swimming conditions, something that is not always guaranteed on Koh Tao.

The beach is also excellent for snorkelling, thanks to the small coral reef located just offshore. The best snorkelling spots can be found at both rocky ends of the bay, where you often encounter reef sharks, pufferfish, squid and colourful schools of tropical fish.

The atmosphere at Ao Leuk Beach is generally peaceful and relaxed, making it a perfect place to unwind. Two resorts are located directly at the beach and offer restaurants and refreshments for visitors. Aside from that, there is very little additional infrastructure in the area, and the bay feels pleasantly remote. If you want to explore more of the island, renting a scooter is highly recommended.

Since Ao Leuk Beach is also a private beach, an entrance fee of 50 Baht is charged. In return, you receive a soft drink and access to the beach loungers.

Useful Facts About Ao Leuk Beach

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Parking: Plenty of parking available

  • Food & Drinks: Available at the nearby resorts

  • Attractiveness: A great choice for travellers who want to enjoy both snorkelling and swimming. In my opinion, Ao Leuk Beach is one of the best beaches on Koh Tao for swimming

10. Mango Viewpoint – Views Over Koh Tao’s West Coast

Mango Viewpoint is located on a hill and is considered one of the best viewpoints on Koh Tao. Especially during sunset, it becomes one of the island’s highlights, attracting many visitors from the nearby beaches to enjoy the evening atmosphere.

The panoramic view from Mango Viewpoint is truly impressive. From the top, you can overlook almost the entire west coast of Koh Tao all the way down to the island’s southern tip.

The viewpoint is also a fantastic place to relax for a few hours. You can unwind in one of the hammocks, read a book, simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere or sip on a refreshing cocktail or smoothie at the small bar and restaurant located at the viewpoint.

Unfortunately, an entrance fee of 100 Baht is charged for visiting Mango Viewpoint. However, in my opinion, the spectacular panoramic scenery is definitely worth the price

Useful Facts About Mango Viewpoint

  • Location: View on Google Maps

  • Parking: Plenty of parking available

  • Entrance Fee: 100 Baht (approx. EUR 2.60)

  • Attractiveness: Beautiful viewpoint and a great place to relax and unwind. However, it is not necessarily a must-visit highlight on Koh Tao

11. Koh Nang Yuan – One of the Most Famous Photo Spots in Thailand

Koh Nang Yuan is a small island located just a short distance from Koh Tao. This tropical gem is truly unique and one of the most extraordinary places on the planet. Koh Nang Yuan actually consists of three small islands connected by a stunning powder-white sandbank, creating a magical and unforgettable scenery. The islands are among the most photographed places in Thailand, so chances are high that you have already seen this iconic location on social media, postcards, travel blogs or in magazines.

If you want to capture incredible travel photos for your Instagram account or photo collection, you should definitely hike up to the famous Koh Nang Yuan Viewpoint. The viewpoint can be reached via a trail in around 20 minutes. However, parts of the path feel more like a climbing route, so wearing proper shoes is highly recommended.

The hike is absolutely manageable though, and your effort will be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view over the sandbank and the surrounding turquoise sea. It is best to visit early in the morning, as the island becomes extremely crowded after around 10:30 AM. Long queues often form around the viewpoint later in the day.

How to Reach the Koh Nang Yuan Viewpoint

Starting from the pier, keep left and cross the famous sandbank. Afterwards, a wooden boardwalk leads across the rocks until you reach a signpost. From there, the path to the viewpoint begins on the right-hand side and initially climbs uphill via several stairways.

The Beach at Koh Nang Yuan

The white sandy beach is surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise water and offers some excellent snorkelling opportunities. However, the island is not the best place for extensive swimming, as the sea remains very shallow and does not get particularly deep. In addition, the soft sandy seabed gradually changes into rockier sections further into the water.

Getting to Koh Nang Yuan, Entrance Fees and Useful Information

The easiest way to reach Koh Nang Yuan is from Sairee Beach. From there, regular longtail boats operate between the islands, usually costing around 600 Baht per person for a round trip.

Officially, the island only opens to visitors at 10 AM. It is highly recommended to arrive as early as possible, because from around 10:30 AM onwards, day-trip boats from Koh Samui and Koh Phangan begin arriving, causing the island to become extremely crowded.

In addition, an entrance fee of 100 Baht per person is charged for visiting the island, making Koh Nang Yuan one of the more expensive attractions around Koh Tao.

By the way, Koh Tao can perfectly be combined with the nearby sister islands Koh Samui and Koh Phangan for an unforgettable island-hopping adventure.
